Kay Hawley believes a rich life begins with understanding how money really works. An award-winning educator recognized as Minnesota Music Educator of the Year, Kay spent more than 35 years as a public school teacher helping young people build confidence, develop skills, and discover what they are truly capable of. Her classroom taught her something important: when ideas are explained clearly and in the right order, people can learn almost anything.

Alongside her work in education, Kay taught financial awareness workshops to hundreds of adults throughout the Twin Cities. Again and again, she met capable, hardworking people who admitted they had never been taught how money actually works. Those conversations led her to a simple question: What if people learned these ideas earlier?

The answer grew out of a lesson from the music room. You cannot teach a young musician to play in tune until they learn to listen. In the same way, young people cannot make wise money decisions until they learn to look honestly at where they are.

Growing up in a large family with limited means, Kay absorbed many of the same messages about money that young people still carry today: fear, scarcity, and the feeling that financial success belonged to someone else. Years later, through her Plan Now, Smile Later workshops and her work with students and adults, she came to understand that financial confidence is not built through complicated formulas. It grows from understanding a few important principles and applying them consistently over time.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Kay is also the recipient of the 2013 Northfield High School Distinguished Alumni Award.

Start Smart Money Basics is the book Kay wishes someone had handed her when she was young. Drawing on decades of teaching and her work in financial education, it helps young adults understand how money works, avoid common mistakes, and build confidence in the decisions that shape their future.
